Does The Reformation Still Matter? The Five Solas of the Reformation

In May 2025, the Roman Catholic Church selected a new Pope. This was an international event and brought up many discussions about the Church, Christianity, leadership.  We began this series (Summer 2025–Does the Reformation Still Matter?) as a means to help us grow in discernment—a multi-week series investigating the tumultuous times of the 1500s and why it still matters today.

The “Protestant Reformation” began with a Roman Catholic Priest that turned into a protest against the biblical errors by the Roman Catholic Church.

History does matter and if we don’t learn from both history and the biblical/theological issues involved, we will be doomed to repeat past failures.  Controversies in the Church as a whole is not a new thing.

Indeed, read Acts 15 for the most decisive moment in the Gospel—and—how the Church responded to it with the Jerusalem Council.  Also, see Galatians 1-3, esp 1:1-10 for Paul’s dealing with false teachers that eventually led up to the Acts 15 Council.  Read Jude, esp v3 to see Jesus’ 1/2 brother and his feelings towards false teachers who would twist the Gospel—and his call to believers to stand for the Gospel.  We endeavor to hear his call to Gospel faithfulness.

Please hear this: the HEART behind this series and all topics we address that may be deemed controversial is NOT to please man on the one hand, NOR on the other to start fights, but to continually ask, “What does God’s Word say?” and “How can we bring Him greater glory in understanding Him through His Word and in more obedient lives?”

We do NOT  claim to be “better” or “smarter” than anyone else. We take our calling to be people ruled by God, under the Authority of His Word, led by His Spirit. We want to know the truth so we can better point people to the TRUTH WHO SAVES, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thank you for your many questions about the Pope, Catholicism.  I pray this series helps you understand WHY we are called “Protestants” (vs Roman Catholics).  I pray that we would all learn and grow from this series investigating a climactic turning point in history in the reclamation of the Gospel of GRACE (about the 5 Sola’s that distinguish the Protestant declaration of HOW one is saved). This is not a series about “becoming Reformed” (ie, TULIP for those who are interested).
